How to Choose the Right RTV Gasket Maker

RTV (room-temperature vulcanizing) gasket makers replace cut gaskets on many engine surfaces, but the colour coding matters.

Grey RTV Grey sensor-safe RTV is the general purpose choice for oil pans, timing covers and water pumps. It resists oil and coolant and stays flexible through heat cycles.

Black RTV Black RTV offers higher oil resistance and is often specified for transmission pans and differential covers.

Red / high temperature RTV Red RTV handles the highest continuous service temperatures and is used near exhaust and turbo components.

Application checklist 1. Clean and degrease both flanges completely. 2. Apply one continuous 3 mm bead - an unbroken bead is what makes the seal. 3. Assemble within the skin-over window and torque to specification. 4. Allow 24 hours before pressurising the system.
